Nepal

Nepal is a 56,000 sq. km - rectangular landmass between Tibet to the north and India to the south.

The Himalaya stretch across the entire northern border while. - only 100 miles south - skirt steaming tropical jungle. The largest area of hills and valleys lie in between. Major mountain snowmelt, run through the country north - to - south. Nepal's 17 million belong to widely varying race and stock - the Tibeto - -Buddhist Sherpas in the north, Indo Aryan groups such as the Brahmin and Chettri and the Mongoloid Tamangs and Gurungs in the middle hills and valleys, Indic groups in the Terai lowlands, and the urban Newars in Kathmandu valley.

Most of the country's population is Hindu in this Hindu state, but Buddhism is widely practiced. More than two dozen languages and dialects are spoken, but the lingua franca is Nepali or Parbati, an Inso - European language: others are rooted in the Tibeto - Burman family.
